Garage door licensing in California

California is one of only three states that license garage door work as a distinct trade. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issues C-61/D-28 Doors, Gates and Activating Devices, and the register is public, free and searchable by licence number or business name.

Verify a licence yourself, in about a minute

  1. Enter the licence number the company gave you, or search by business name.
  2. Check the status reads “Active” — not expired, suspended or inactive.
  3. Check the classification includes C-61/D-28, which is the one that covers garage doors and operators.
  4. Check the business name on the licence matches the company quoting you. A licence held by a different entity is the most common discrepancy.
  5. Check the workers’ compensation and bond entries, both shown on the same record.
